Etymology: < post-classical Latin post diem (in e.g. (with reference to sense B.) solvit post diem (1808)) < post after (see post- prefix) + diem , accusative of diēs day (see diurnal adj.). Compare classical Latin post diem, literally ‘after the day’, but only recorded in sense ‘after daybreak’ (compare post eum diem after that day, post tertium diem after the third day (counting inclusively), etc.).The use in sense A. probably also represents the shortening of a post-classical Latin phrase, but no suitable phrase has been traced.
