Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; partly modelled on a French lexical item, partly modelled on a Latin lexical item, and partly modelled on a Greek lexical item. Etymons: poly- comb. form, syllable n.
Etymology: < poly- comb. form + syllable n., after Middle French polysyllabe and its etymons post-classical Latin polysyllaba and Hellenistic Greek πολυσύλλαβος (see polysyllabe n.). Compare earlier monosyllable n., and also monosyllable adj.
