Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Or (ii) a borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin polysyllabus ; Greek πολυσύλλαβος , -ic suffix.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin polysyllabus or its etymon Hellenistic Greek πολυσύλλαβος (see polysyllabe n.) + -ic suffix. Compare post-classical Latin polysyllabicus (a1601), French polysyllabique (1550 in Middle French). Compare earlier polysyllabical adj., polysyllable adj., and also monosyllabic adj. With polysyllabicity n. at Derivatives compare earlier polysyllabism n. 1.
Of a word: consisting of many (usually more than three) syllables. Also, of language, etc.: consisting of or characterized by polysyllables.
