† intempestiousadj.
Origin: Either (i) formed within English, by derivation. Or perhaps (ii) a variant or alteration of another lexical item. Etymons: intempestive adj., -ous suffix; -ious suffix.
Etymology: Either (i) < intempestive adj. + -ous suffix (with omission of v , either as a typographical error, or perhaps on account of the rounded vowel; compare later intempestivous (1657 in an isolated attestation, written as two words, perhaps erroneously)), or (ii) perhaps an alteration (with suffix substitution: see -ious suffix) of intempestive adj. Compare later tempestivous adj. and tempestivous (1659 in an apparently isolated attestation).
