Etymology: < scientific Latin polystachyus (1763 or earlier as specific epithet; < poly- poly- comb. form + ancient Greek στάχυς ear of corn: see stachys n.) + -ous suffix. Compare scientific Latin Polystachya, genus name (1825 or earlier), Hellenistic Greek πολύσταχυς rich in ears of corn (Theocritus).

Botany. Obsolete.

Having many ears or spikes, as a grass.
