单词 portulaca
释义

portulacan.

Brit. /ˌpɔːtʃᵿˈlakə/, /ˌpɔːtjᵿˈlakə/, U.S. /ˌpɔrtʃəˈlɑkə/
Forms: Middle English–1500s 1700s– portulaca, 1700s– portulacca.
Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin portulāca.
Etymology: < classical Latin portulāca purslane (in post-classical Latin also portulacca ), of uncertain origin (see note). Compare portulac n., purslane n.Classical Latin portulāca occurs in a number of variant forms and its origin is difficult to determine. If portulāca , the most common form, represents the original form it may derive < portula small gate ( < porta port n.3 + -ula -ula suffix) + -āca (in lingulāca gossip, fish resembling a tongue, plant with tongue-shaped leaves; < lingua tongue (see lingual adj. and n.) + -ula -ula suffix + -āca , feminine of -ācus , suffix forming adjectives), perhaps in allusion to the circumscissile seed capsule, the top of which forms a separate lid. Alternatively, if the variant porcillāca (Pliny) represents the original form, it may derive from < porcus female genitals, specific sense of porcus pig (see pork n.1) + -illa -illa suffix + -āca , with euphemistic alteration (compare Greek χοιροβότανον , denoting the same plant (in undated medical texts) < χοῖρος pig, also female genitals (see cherogril n.) + βοτάνη plant: see botano- comb. form). N.E.D. (1907) gives the pronunciation as (pōəɹtiulēi·kă) /pɔətjuːˈleɪkə/.
Originally: garden purslane, Portulaca oleracea (family Portulacaceæ). Later more widely: any plant of the genus Portulaca, which comprises trailing succulent plants of warm and tropical regions, with a calyx of two sepals and brightly coloured flowers opening only in direct sunshine; esp. one grown for ornament, such as the sun plant, P. grandiflora. Also (in form Portulaca): the genus itself.Valid publication of the genus name: Linnaeus Species Plantarum (1753) I. 455, after J. Pitton de Tournefort Inst. Rei Herbariæ (1700) I. 236.
