Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French orcanet.
Etymology: < Middle French orcanet (late 14th cent.), orchanette (1538), orcanette (1546; French orcanète , orcanette ), altered form (with or- for ar- perhaps after or gold: see or n.1) of arquenet (c1393) < Old French alcanne , alchane (13th cent.; < post-classical Latin alkanna alcanna n.), with alteration of al- to ar- (see note) + -et -et suffix1. Compare the parallel formation alkanet n.Other forms with ar- for etymological al- are Middle French (Fribourg) arcanna red colour made from reddish clay (15th–16th cent.), red chalk used by carpenters (1555), French arcanne (1611 in Cotgrave).
Now rare.
The plant dyer's alkanet, Alkanna tinctoria (family Boraginaceae), whose roots yield a red dye; †the dye obtained from this plant (obsolete).
