A painting, typically an altarpiece, consisting of more than three leaves or panels joined by hinges or folds. Cf. diptych n., triptych n.

Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin polyptychum.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin polyptychum (usually in plural polyptycha account books, registers) < ancient Greek πολύπτυχος having many folds, in Hellenistic Greek also folded many times, having many leaves, of writing tablets < πολυ- poly- comb. form + πτυχή fold (see polyptych n.1). Compare French polyptyque (1803 in this sense as †polyptique), Italian polittico (a1758 in this sense).
