Etymology: < ancient Greek περόνη fibula, brooch (see perone n.) + scientific Latin -ium (see -y suffix⁴), apparently after German Mantelspange (1865 in this sense in the source cited in quot. 1880 at main sense), literally ‘cloak pin’. Compare Hellenistic Greek περόνιον small peg or pin.
