Inflections: Plural peronia.
Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with a borrowing from Latin; apparently modelled on a German lexical item. Etymons: Greek περόνη, Latin -ium.
Etymology: < ancient Greek περόνη fibula, brooch (see perone n.) + scientific Latin -ium (see -y suffix4), apparently after German Mantelspange (1865 in this sense in the source cited in quot. 1880 at main sense), literally ‘cloak pin’. Compare Hellenistic Greek περόνιον small peg or pin.
Zoology.
In certain hydromedusae: a tentacle formed by an extension of the umbrellar ectoderm and lacking mesogloea. Usually in plural.
