单词 porge
释义

porgev.

Brit. /pɔːdʒ/, U.S. /pɔrdʒ/
Origin: Of uncertain origin. Probably a borrowing from Yiddish. Etymon: Yiddish porshn.
Etymology: Immediate origin uncertain; ultimately < classical Latin purgāre to cleanse (see purge v.1). Compare earlier porger n.Since the word is used by Ashkenazi Jews, it is probably immediately < Western Yiddish porshn (compare Jewish Dutch poorsjen (also poorschen , poorsen , poresen , porsen )). An alternative etymology is < Jewish Portuguese porgar (15th cent. in form porguar ; compare Judaeo-Spanish porgar ); this is less likely because words of Sephardic origin have rarely been adopted by English-speaking Ashkenazi Jews. In either case the pronunciation of the final consonant is difficult to account for; it has probably been influenced by purge v.1 See further D. Gold ‘From Latin *purgare to British Jewish English porge: a Study in Jewish Intralinguistics’ in Jewish Lang. Rev. 3 117–55. For the basis of the ritual compare Genesis 32:33.
