Etymology: < classical Latin pollicāris of or relating to the thumb, in post-classical Latin also of a thumb's length, of an inch (1520 in a British source) < pollic- , pollex thumb (see pollex n.), in post-classical Latin also measure of length, inch (frequently from 12th cent. in British sources) + -āris -ar suffix1.
