Etymology: Partly < Middle French, French pneumatocèle abnormal collection of gas in the scrotum (1562), abnormal collection of gas in an organ or its parenchyma (1845), collection of air between the bones of the cranium and the periosteum (1958), partly < post-classical Latin pneumatocele (1583 in the source translated in quot. 1585 at sense 1), and partly < their etymon Byzantine Greek πνευματοκήλη aneurysmal varicocele ( < ancient Greek πνευματο- pneumato- comb. form + -κήλη -cele comb. form).With sense 2 compare earlier pneumocele n. 2, pneumonocele n. at pneumono- comb. form .
