Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with English elements. Etymons: Latin pluvia , -o- connective, -graph comb. form.
Etymology: < classical Latin pluvia rain (see pluvial adj. and n.2) + -o- connective + -graph comb. form. Compare earlier pluviometer n.Quot. 1886 apparently refers to Robert Beckley, mechanic at the Kew Observatory from 1854 to 1871, who designed a rain gauge used widely in British observatories.
A recording rain gauge. Also: a record of rainfall made by such an instrument.
