Etymology: < classical Latin pluvia rain (see pluvial adj. and n.²) + -o- connective + -graph comb. form. Compare earlier pluviometer n.Quot. 1886 apparently refers to Robert Beckley, mechanic at the Kew Observatory from 1854 to 1871, who designed a rain gauge used widely in British observatories.
