单词 nant
释义

nantn.

Brit. /nant/, U.S. /nænt/
Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Welsh. Partly a borrowing from French. Etymons: Welsh nant; French nant.
Etymology: Partly < Welsh nant stream, valley (compare Old Cornish nans valley, Old Breton, Breton nant valley: see below), and partly < French regional (south-east, especially Savoie) nant watercourse, torrent < Gaulish nanto valley, stream (see below). The further etymology of the Celtic base is uncertain; a relationship with Gaulish nemeton (see nemoral adj.) is possible. With reference to France, perhaps as semi-naturalized loan /nɒ̃/. Attested widely in place names in Wales and France.
Now rare.
A valley. Also: a brook.
