Etymology: < classical Latin plūmōsus plumose adj. + -ity suffix. Compare Middle French plumeuseté (1530 in Palsgrave in an apparently isolated attestation), Italian piumosità (a1519). Compare slightly later plumose adj., plumous adj.Blount (see quot. 1656) records a Latin form plumositas but this has not been traced.

Now chiefly Zoology and Botany.
