Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin paneitas.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin paneitas the quality of being bread (15th cent. in a British source; compare earlier panitas (14th cent. in a British source)) < an unattested adjective *pāneus of bread ( < classical Latin pānis bread (see pain n.2) + -eus : see -eous suffix) + -tās (see -ty suffix1; compare -ity suffix). N.E.D. (1904) gives the pronunciation as (pănī·ĭti) /pəˈniːɪtɪ/.
Obsolete. rare.
The quality, fact, or state of being bread. Chiefly with reference to the Eucharistic bread.
