单词 panegyry
释义

panegyryn.

Brit. /pəˈniːdʒᵻri/, /pəˈnɛdʒᵻri/, /ˈpanᵻdʒɪri/, U.S. /pəˈnidʒəri/, /pəˈnɛdʒəri/, /ˈpænəˌdʒɪri/
Forms: 1600s panegery, 1600s panegury, 1600s panigery, 1600s 1800s– panegyry.
Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Partly a borrowing from Greek. Etymons: Latin panēgyris; Greek πανήγυρις.
Etymology: < (i) classical Latin panēgyris festival, in post-classical Latin also general assembly, laudatory speech, and its etymon (ii) ancient Greek πανήγυρις panegyris n., with alteration of the ending: compare -y suffix3. Compare French panégyrie (1824; earlier as panegyris (1765) and panegyri (1823)).The alteration of the ending was perhaps a result of panegyris being apprehended as a plural in -s.
Now rare.
