Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French poigne.
Etymology: < Law French poigne fist (also in en poigne in hand) < Anglo-Norman poigne , variant of Anglo-Norman and Old French poign , poing , etc. (French poing ) < classical Latin pugnus fist (see pugnacious adj.). N.E.D. (1907) gives the pronunciation as (poin) /pɔɪn/.
Obsolete.
A closed hand or fist. Only in phrase in poigne: in the fist; (figurative) secret, undisclosed.
