Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Panorpa.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Panorpa (Linnaeus Systema Naturæ (1735) f. 8) < ancient Greek παν- pan- comb. form + ὅρπηξ (non-Attic ὄρπηξ) goad, sting (of unknown origin), so called because the male of this species is armed both at the mouth and at the tail. Compare French panorpe (1764).
Entomology.
A genus of scorpion flies (family Panorpidae, order Mecoptera); (also panorpa) a scorpion fly of this genus.Valid publication of the genus name: Linnaeus Systema Naturæ (ed. 10, 1758) I. 551.
