β. pre-1700 plumdamy, 1900s– plum-damie.

Origin: From a proper name, combined with an English element; probably modelled on a French lexical item. Etymons: plum n., proper name Damas.
Etymology: < plum n. + Damas, the French name of the city of Damascus (see damask n. and adj.), probably after Middle French prune de Damas (late 14th cent. or earlier; French damas (1545)). Compare earlier damson n. and slightly later damask prune n. at damask n. and adj. 2b, and the French words cited at these entries.Apparently originally as a collective plural (with plural agreement); but also occasionally as a singular, hence the forms with an additional -es plural ending. The β forms show an inferred singular derived from the interpretation of the -s of the stem as the plural ending.
Scottish. Now rare.
A damson or damson plum (frequently one which is dried); a prune. Usually in plural. Sc. National Dict. at ploom records the sense ‘damson-plum or damson’ as still in use in Selkirkshire in 1966.
