Etymology: Of uncertain origin; it has been identified with the Old English éad happy (compare eady adj., edness n.), but the latter appears to be a spurious word evolved from corrupt readings. Perhaps ed(d)ist may be a scribal error for oddist, which occurs elsewhere in the poem.
Obsolete. rare.
