Origin: Formed within English, by derivation; probably modelled on a French lexical item. Etymons: polity n.1, -ian suffix.
Etymology: < polity n.1 + -ian suffix, probably after Middle French policien politician (16th cent.; earlier in sense ‘citizen’ (13th cent. as pulissien in an isolated attestation in Old French, c1485 in Middle French) < police police n. + -ien -ian suffix). Compare slightly earlier politic n. 2, politique n., and slightly later politician n. 2. N.E.D. (1907) gives the pronunciation as (poli·ʃăn) /pəʊˈlɪʃən/.
Obsolete.
