Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French plumail.
Etymology: < Middle French, French plumail tuft of feathers, plume (c1440; c1240 in Old French denoting a pad used to dress wounds) < plume plume n. + -ail , suffix corresponding to Latin -āculum (compare attirail n.). Compare Catalan plomall (c1415), Old Occitan plumail (1397), Old Occitan, Occitan plumalh (15th cent.; also in Occitan as plumau, ploumau, plumal, ploumal). Compare also post-classical Latin plumalis feathered (6th cent. or earlier), feather-bed or pillow (14th cent. in British sources; also as plumale).
Obsolete. rare.
Plumage. In quot. figurative: worldly goods.
