Rome-scotn. Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: Rome n., English gescot ; Rome n., shot n.1 Etymology: In α. forms < Rome n. + Old English gescot payment (see shot n.1). In β. forms and γ. forms probably partly shortened < α. forms and partly < Rome n. + shot n.1; in later use in β. forms probably partly remodelled after scot n.2, partly remodelled after forms in Latin and in Scandinavian languages, and partly a revival (especially by historians, from the written record) of Old English or early Middle English forms. Compare post-classical Latin Romscotum , Romescotum (1207, c1260 respectively in British sources). The Old English word was probably borrowed into early Scandinavian; compare Old Icelandic Rómaskattr (which shows substitution of skattr scat n.1 for the second element), Old Danish romskud, Old Swedish romscuth, romskott.Old English forms in -sc- probably showed palatalization and assibilation, which would normally be expected in this position, although the Old English spelling system itself usually does not indicate this (however, compare the form Rom-gesceot). It is very uncertain how forms in -sc- in early Middle English should be interpreted. The division of material adopted here is based purely on the spelling forms. society > faith > worship > benefice > other financial matters > [noun] > payment to specific person > to the pope α.
