Etymology: < German Pleuston (C. Schröter 1896, in C. Schröter and O. Kirchner Die Vegetation des Bodensees (1896) I. 14) < ancient Greek πλευστέον necessity of sailing ( < πλεῖν to sail, swim (see pleon n.¹) + -τέον , neuter of -τέος , suffix forming verbal adjectives expressing necessity), after German Plankton plankton n., Nekton nekton n. Compare neuston n.

Ecology.

Originally: the macroscopic plants found free-floating on, or partly under, the water surface. Later also: any of the organisms floating at the water surface, considered collectively. Cf. neuston n.
