Origin: A borrowing from German. Etymon: German Pleuston.
Etymology: < German Pleuston (C. Schröter 1896, in C. Schröter and O. Kirchner Die Vegetation des Bodensees (1896) I. 14) < ancient Greek πλευστέον necessity of sailing ( < πλεῖν to sail, swim (see pleon n.1) + -τέον , neuter of -τέος , suffix forming verbal adjectives expressing necessity), after German Plankton plankton n., Nekton nekton n. Compare neuston n.
Ecology.
Originally: the macroscopic plants found free-floating on, or partly under, the water surface. Later also: any of the organisms floating at the water surface, considered collectively. Cf. neuston n.

1909 E. Warming Oecol. Plants iv. xxxix. 166 The floating islands in calm inlets of the Amazon..are often very extensive, and are formed partly of pleuston—for example, of Eichornia azurea—but also of half-floating grasses which do not belong to this formation.
1956 Limnol. & Oceanogr. 1 93 The floating hydrophytes have been divided into pleuston, floating mat, and floating leaf plants by Hess and Hall.
1995 Heredity 75 390 Because of their lack of flight wings, interisland dispersal of Stomion probably occurred by oceanic drift as pleuston or on floating debris.
