Origin: A borrowing from German. Etymon: German Plattdeutsch.
Etymology: < German Plattdeutsch, use as noun of plattdeutsch (adjective) Low German (16th cent.), either < platt flat, low, plain, common (late 16th cent. as plat ; < either Middle Low German plat flat, low, plain or Middle Dutch plat flat, low, weak, plain (late 13th cent.: see plat adj.)) + deutsch German (see Dutch adj.), after an unattested corresponding Middle Low German or Middle Dutch compound (compare German regional (Low German) plattdüütsch ‘Low German’ and Middle Dutch in goede platten duytsche in good plain Dutch (1524 in the foreword of a Dutch translation of the New Testament)), or immediately < such a compound in Middle Low German or Middle Dutch.
The collective term for those dialects of Germany which are not High German; Low German. See German adj. 1.
