Etymology: < scientific Latin Plesianthropus, genus name (R. Broom 1938, in Nature 27 Aug. 377/1) < plesio- plesio- comb. form + -anthropus (see Pithecanthropus n.).

Palaeontology (now historical).

An African fossil hominid of the former genus Plesianthropus, described from remains found in caves at Sterkfontein, near Johannesburg, South Africa, and now usually included in the species Australopithecus africanus.
