Origin: A borrowing from Greek. Etymons: Greek πλατε-, πλάτος, τρόπος.
Etymology: < ancient Greek πλατε-, πλάτος breadth, width (see platometer n.) + τρόπος turning (see trope n.). N.E.D.(1907) gives the pronunciation as (plæ·tĭˌtroup) /ˈplætɪtrəʊp/.
Anatomy. Obsolete.
Any organ which forms one of a pair situated symmetrically on either side of the median plane of the body.

1882 B. G. Wilder & S. H. Gage Anat. Technol. Domest. Cat 32 Two similar organs, one upon each side, are lateral in position, and called paired organs. Each such paired organ may be called the platetrope of the other, or its lateral homologue, or the fellow of the opposite side.
1888 Amer. Naturalist 22 321 The Meckelian cartilage appears to be ensheathed..by only two bones. One of these is the dentigerous dentary, which almost meets its platetrope at the symphysis.
