Geology.
With singular agreement. A theory in which the interactions of moving lithospheric plates (plate n. 26) and the spreading of the sea floor are used to explain certain of the Earth's features and processes (as mid-ocean ridges, deep-sea trenches, mountain formation, seismic activity, etc.), and which provides a mechanism for the theory of continental drift. Also (occasionally with plural agreement): the plate movements themselves.
