Etymology: < place v. + -ment suffix. In sense 3 probably after French placement (1922 or earlier in this sense; 1610 or earlier in sense 1, 1834 in sense 2). Compare earlier displacement n., replacement n., and also earlier placing n. N.E.D. (1907) gives only the pronunciation (plēi·smĕnt) /ˈpleɪsmənt/.
