Origin: From a proper name, combined with an English element; modelled on a Latin lexical item. Etymons: proper name Harder , -ian suffix.
Etymology: < the name of Johann Jacob Harder (1656–1711), Swiss anatomist, who first described the gland in 1694 + -ian suffix, after post-classical Latin Harderianus (1696 or earlier in glandula Harderiana).Compare German Hardersche Drüse (1810 or earlier; after post-classical Latin glandula Harderiana).
Zoology.
Harderian gland n. a gland present in the inner angle of the eye in those birds, mammals, and other vertebrates that have a nictitating membrane or ‘third eyelid’, typically secreting a slightly oily lubricant.
