Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from Latin. Or (ii) a borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin pinguidus ; Latin pinguis , -id suffix1.
Etymology: Either < post-classical Latin pinguidus (9th cent. as pinguidior , comparative), or independently < classical Latin pinguis fat, plump, fatty, greasy, rich, fertile, (of literary style) clumsy, coarse + -id suffix1, on the model of English adjectives in -id from Latin adjectives in -idus (e.g. gravid adj., languid adj., torpid adj., etc.). Compare earlier pinguidity n., pinguedinous adj.
