Etymology: Partly (in α. forms) < either fairy n. or fairy adj. + the plural of bell n.1, and partly (in β. forms) < either fairy n. or fairy adj. + bell n.1 (compare bell n.1 4).With the early quots. perhaps compare Scottish Gaelic cluigean na mnàtha sìthe, foxglove, literally ‘little bell (or earring) of the fairy woman’ (beginning of the 20th cent. or earlier), Welsh clychau'r tylwyth teg (plural) bluebell, harebell, literally ‘bells of the fair kinsfolk’ (undated in dictionaries of Welsh), although it is unclear whether either of these had any influence on the English word.

Any of various plants having somewhat bell-shaped flowers, as the foxglove, Digitalis purpurea; esp. any of several plants of (or formerly of) the genus Disporum (family Asparagaceae), of Asia and North America. Also: the flowers of any of these plants.In quot. 1829: poetic a bell-shaped flower imagined as making a sound like a bell.
