单词 fairway
释义

fairwayn.

Brit. /ˈfɛːweɪ/, U.S. /ˈfɛrˌweɪ/
Forms: late Middle English faireway, late Middle English farewaye, late Middle English ffarewaye, late Middle English ffarewey, late Middle English ffareweye, late Middle English– fairway, 1500s fayreway, 1800s fareway.
Origin: Probably formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: fare n.1, way n.1
Etymology: Probably < fare n.1 + way n.1, with remodelling of the first element after fair adj. (compare sense 9a at that entry). Compare also Old English færweg road, thoroughfare, showing a parallel formation with first element fær (see fare n.1). Compare Middle Dutch vārweg road (Dutch vaarweg road for vehicles (obsolete in this sense), navigable waterway), Middle Low German vārwech road (for vehicles), public highway, navigable waterway, German Fahrweg navigable waterway (1366 as verweg, obsolete in this sense), road (for vehicles) (15th cent. as varweg; now rare), Old Icelandic farvegr track, navigable waterway, Old Swedish farvägher road (for vehicles) (Swedish farväg), Danish farvej road, highway (already in early modern Danish).Apparently attested earlier (presumably in sense ‘road, thoroughfare’) in the place name Fareweia , Devon (1086; also Fayrewaye (1294), Farwaye (1297); now Farway); compare also Varewaye (field name), Iwerne Minster, Dorset (1574). With sense 3 compare earlier fair green n.1
