Etymology: < belove v. + -ed suffix1.Earlier use is implied by the surname cited at well-beloved adj. Compare also the specialized early use of the derivative well-beloved n. 1. The syllabic pronunciation of the suffix may have been preserved by the frequent use of the word in poetry and perhaps also in early modern prose texts which remained in continuous use, such as the King James Bible and the Book of Common Prayer.
