Etymology: < classical Latin belonē pipefish (Pliny; also as scientific Latin Belone , genus name (Oken 1815, after earlier use by Linnaeus 1761 as a specific name in the binomial Esox belone )) < ancient Greek βελόνη needle, pipefish, garfish < βελός arrow, dart (see belomancy n.) + -ονη , suffix forming nouns. Compare needle n. 11a, needlefish n., and sea-needle n. at sea n. Compounds 6d.

A marine fish of the genus Belone or family Belonidae; a needlefish, a garfish (see garfish n.).Valid publication of the genus name: Cuvier Règne animal (1817) II. 185. Now rare except as a scientific Latin genus name.
