Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from French. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Etymons: French pinnule; Latin pinnula.
Etymology: < Middle French, French pinnule sight of an astronomical instrument (1407–1412 as pynulles , pinule ), small fin (1555) and its etymon classical Latin pinnula (see pinnula n.), in post-classical Latin also sight of an astronomical instrument (1326, a1350 in British sources). With sense 3 compare earlier pinnula n.
1. Either of two sights (usually small square metal plates, pierced with holes, and each turning on a hinge) at the ends of the alidade or index of an astrolabe, quadrant, or similar instrument. Now historical.

2. Zoology. Originally: any part or organ resembling a small wing or fin, or a barb of a feather; esp. †each of the small fins behind the second dorsal and anal fins of a mackerel or tuna (obsolete). Also (now chiefly): a subdivision of a pinna (pinna n.2 2b); esp. any of the jointed lateral branches along the arms of a crinoid. Cf. pinnula n. 2.
