Etymology: < Yiddish kittel < Middle High German kitel, kietel cotton or hempen outer garment (German Kittel overall, smock), further etymology uncertain.There is no evidence to support an occasional suggestion (in older dictionaries) that the German noun is probably derived < Arabic quṭn cotton n.1
A white robe worn mainly by strictly Orthodox Jewish men on certain holy days such as Yom Kippur, and sometimes also used as a burial shroud.
