单词 pickelhaube
释义

pickelhauben.

Brit. /ˈpɪklˌhaʊbə/, U.S. /ˈpɪklˌ(h)aʊbə/
Inflections: Plural pickelhauben, pickelhaubes, unchanged.
Forms: 1800s pickelhaub, 1800s– pickelhaube, 2000s– pickelhauber (irregular). Also with capital initial.
Origin: A borrowing from German. Etymon: German Pickelhaube.
Etymology: < German Pickelhaube Prussian spiked helmet (early modern German peckelhawbe (15th cent.), bickelhaube (16th cent.), Middle High German beckelhūbe , beckenhūbe , all in sense 'iron-plated leather helmet' < becken bowl (see basin n.; compare basinet n.) + hūbe hood, cap (see houve n.); compare Middle Low German pekelhūve ); in later German use the first element has been associated by folk etymology with Pickel spike (see pickle n.2). The plural form pickelhauben reflects the German plural form. Pickelhauben were introduced into the uniform of the Prussian army in 1842 by Friedrich Wilhelm IV, and remained in use in the German army until 1915 (until 1918 as a ceremonial helmet).
Now historical.
A German spiked helmet of a type worn esp. before and during the earlier part of the First World War (1914–18). Also in extended use (by metonymy): a German soldier. Now historical.
