单词 pigmentary
释义

pigmentaryadj.n.

Brit. /ˈpɪɡmənt(ə)ri/, U.S. /ˈpɪɡmənˌtɛri/
Forms: Middle English pygmentarie, Middle English 1800s– pigmentary, 1600s pigmentarie.
Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Partly formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: Latin pigmentārius ; pigment n., -ary suffix1.
Etymology: Originally < classical Latin pigmentārius (adjective) of or belonging to paints or unguents, (noun) a dealer in these, in post-classical Latin especially a dealer in scents, spices, and perfumes (Vetus Latina, Vulgate) < pigmentum (see pigment n.) + -ārius -ary suffix1. In sense A. 2 re-formed < pigment n. + -ary suffix1. Compare slightly earlier pimentary n., pimentary adj.In sense B. 1b probably arising from a misapprehension of post-classical Latin pigmentarius ‘dealer in scents, spices, and perfumes’ in the source, although compare post-classical Latin pigmentaria (neuter plural) fragrance (1414 in a British source).
