Etymology: < German Piemontit ( G. A. Kenngott Das Mohs'sche Mineralsystem(1853) 75) < the name of Piemonte (see Piedmontese n.), where it was found + -it -ite suffix¹.Now preferred to piedmontite n. (see quot. 1971) as being more in accord with the original German spelling and with European practice for mineral names.

Mineralogy.

A reddish-brown or reddish-black mineral of the epidote group that is a silicate of calcium, aluminium, iron, and manganese belonging to the monoclinic crystal system.
