Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: field n.1, -er suffix1; field v., -er suffix1.
Etymology: Partly < field n.1 + -er suffix1, and partly < field v. + -er suffix1.Earlier currency in sense 1 is perhaps shown by the surnames Richard le Feldere (1310), Galfr. le Felder (1327), although these may alternatively reflect a sense ‘person who dwells by a field’ (compare surnames cited at field n.1). With sense 2 compare earlier fieldsman n. 2.

2. Cricket and Baseball. A member of the side that is not batting and is in the field, esp. one whose task is to field the ball. Cf. fieldsman n. 2; centre, left, right fielder: see the first element.Fieldsman is used in the Laws of Cricket until the 2000 code, in which fielder is preferred.In Baseball, neither the pitcher nor the catcher is regarded as a fielder; in Cricket, the bowler is sometimes regarded as distinct from the fielders.
