Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: phosphorus n., phosphor n., -esce suffix.
Etymology: < either phosphorus n. or phosphor n. + -esce suffix, after phosphorescent adj. Compare post-classical Latin phosphorescere (1787 or earlier), Swedish fosforescera (1747 as phosphorescera).
intransitive. To emit light without any perceptible heat, to shine in the dark; to emit light or radiation by phosphorescence. Also figurative.
