单词 mantegar
释义

mantegarn.

Forms: 1700s mantegar, 1700s manteger, 1700s mantegur.
Origin: Probably formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: manticore n., man n.1
Etymology: Probably < mantegre, mantiger or similar variants of manticore n.; compare Italian manticora , glossed in Baretti Dict. Eng. & Ital. Lang. (1760) as ‘mantiger, a kind of monkey, or baboon’, and compare also the adoption of satyr n. and Sphinx n. as the names of primate species. The first element is frequently reanalysed (chiefly humorously) as though < man n.1 by folk etymology: see also man-tiger n. 3.
Obsolete.
A kind of baboon (not identified). The descriptions suggest the mandrill, although 18th-cent. naturalists appear to have considered the two to be distinct.
