单词 manteca
释义

mantecan.

Brit. /manˈteɪkə/, U.S. /mænˈteɪkə/
Forms: 1600s mantegue, 1600s manteque, 1600s– manteca, 1700s mantecu.
Origin: A borrowing from Spanish. Etymon: Spanish manteca.
Etymology: < Spanish manteca lard, fat (1155 as mantega , 1181 as mantecca ; 1106 as m-n-t-y-qa , in a Mozarabic text), of uncertain origin (perhaps non-Indo-European). In forms manteque , mantegue after French mantèque (1648 in the passage translated in quot. 1660), †mantegue (1664 in the passage translated in quot. 1687). Compare Portuguese manteiga (1118; now also used in South America of any edible oil or fat), Old Occitan mantega (1153), and Catalan mantega (1249), all with sense ‘butter’; also Italian manteca (1669, < Spanish; the chief current sense is ‘pomade’).
Chiefly in Spain and Spanish-speaking countries: a kind of butter or substitute for butter; lard, fat. Also figurative. manteca de puerco n. [ < Spanish manteca de puerco] hog's lard.
