释义

Peutingern.

Brit. /ˈpjuːtɪndʒə/, /ˈpɔɪtɪŋɡə/, U.S. /ˈpjudɪndʒər/, /ˈpɔɪdɪŋər/
Origin: From a proper name. Etymon: proper name Peutinger.
Etymology: < the name of the Peutinger family of Augsburg in whose library the map was held when it was first published. Compare earlier Peutingerian adj. With Peutinger Table compare earlier Peutingerian table at Peutingerian adj. The map was discovered in or shortly before 1507 by the German humanist Conrad Celtis (1459–1508); he bequeathed it to the humanist and Imperial counsellor Conrad Peutinger (1465–1547), and it was published in part in 1591 and in full in 1598 by Peutinger's kinsman, Marcus Welser. After the death of the last of the Peutinger family in 1714, it was offered for sale and was purchased in 1720 by Prince Eugene of Savoy, passing with the rest of his library to the Hofbibliothek in Vienna on his death in 1737; it is now Codex Vindobonensis 324 in the Österreichische Nationalbibliothek.
Used attributively and in the genitive with reference to a famous medieval copy of a late Roman itinerary map of the world. Chiefly in Peutinger Table. Cf. Peutingerian adj.The map was copied in the 12th or early 13th cent., and originally consisted of twelve sheets. One has been lost and the others are now mounted together on a roll. The archetype, probably of the 4th cent., was itself based on earlier maps.
