Etymology: < scientific Latin Peucedaneae, tribe name (A. P. de Candolle Coll. mémoires hist. règne végétal (1829) v. 17; < scientific Latin Peucedanum , genus name (Linnaeus Species plantarum (1753) 245; < classical Latin peucedanum an umbelliferous plant, probably sulphurwort < Hellenistic Greek πευκέδανον sulphurwort < ancient Greek πεύκη pine (see peucyl n.) + -εδανον , suffix of uncertain origin; so called because the plant is bitter and its seeds smell of resin) + -eae : see -eous suffix) + -ous suffix. N.E.D. (1905) gives the pronunciation as (piūsĭdēi·niəs) /pjuːsɪˈdeɪniːəs/.
Botany. Obsolete. rare.
In the system of A. P. de Candolle: belonging to a tribe of the family Apiaceae ( Umbelliferae) comprising the genus Peucedanum and closely related genera.
