Etymology: < classical Latin petulcus inclined to butt, butting, wanton, frisky ( < petere to aim at, assail (see petition n.) + -ulcus , suffix forming adjectives, also seen in hiulcus : see hiulcity n.) + -ous suffix. Compare earlier petulcity n.
rare (now literary and archaic).
Inclined to butt, butting; (figurative) wanton, frisky.
