单词 persona grata
释义

persona gratan.

Brit. /pəˌsəʊnə ˈɡrɑːtə/, U.S. /pərˌsoʊnə ˈɡrɑdə/
Inflections: Plural personae gratae, (rare) persona gratas.
Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin persona grata.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin persona grata (see below) < classical Latin persōna person n. + grāta , feminine of grātus grate adj.Post-classical Latin persona grata is attested in the phrase persona ydonea et apostolice sedi ac ipsi imperatori grata ‘a suitable person, acceptable both to the Holy See and to the emperor himself’ in a Latin document of 1478 and as personam gratam (accusative) in one of 1479; a Latin document of 1455 has a similar form of words personis providebimus idoneis non nisi de locis dictionis ipsius Ducis, aut sibi gratae, vel acceptae de aliis locis oriundae ‘we will provide suitable persons only if they are from places under the rule of the said Duke, or, having come from other places, they are acceptable or pleasing to him’. In these and other early instances, the context is always that of the right of certain secular monarchs to veto the appointment of unwelcome candidates to bishoprics or other ecclesiastical dignities. The phrase became increasingly common in German-language discussions of German ecclesiastical law in the second quarter of the 19th cent., following the establishment of such rights of veto from 1821 onwards in Prussia, Hanover, and the Upper Rhineland, and was thence applied to the developing doctrine of the right of governments to veto unacceptable diplomatic personnel.
In predicative use. An acceptable or welcome person, esp. a foreign visitor or diplomat; (without article) acceptable, welcome. Cf. persona non grata n.
