Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: Greenland n., -ite suffix1.
Etymology: < Greenland n. + -ite suffix1 In sense 1 after German Grönlandit (1806 or earlier). In sense 2 apparently after Danish grønlandit (see quot. 1986 at sense 2).
1. Mineralogy. A red or violet gem variety of garnet (from Greenland); almandine. Obsolete.
